ANLOGA, Aug. 10, 24HourNews – Traditional leaders in Anlo are renewing calls for a major investment in Keta, this time to rebuild the town’s sports infrastructure and give young athletes a place to grow.
Speaking at the commissioning of the newly built Awoamefia Togbi Sri III Astro Turf Park at Hogbe Park in Anloga on Thursday, Awadada Togbi Agbesi Awusu II said it was time for Keta to benefit from a similar project.
With support from GEXIM, the Anloga facility was transformed from the historic Hogbe Park into a modern football pitch. The Awadada used the moment to make a case for Keta, a town he said has suffered years of neglect in sports infrastructure due to coastal erosion.
“Keta once had London Park which served us for both sports and community events. Today, because of the sea, we have no standard field left,” Togbi Agbesi Awusu II told dignitaries gathered for the event.
He told the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, GEXIM, and other partners that a modern complex in Keta would do more than provide a playing field. It would create jobs, identify talent early, and give the youth direction.
Anlo, he stressed, has a proud sporting history. Names like Michael Ahey and Godwin Adukpo were mentioned as products of the area who went on to represent Ghana. Without proper facilities, he warned, that legacy risks fading.
The proposal is already backed by Togbi James-Ocloo V, Paramount Chief of Keta. Speaking to *24HourNews*, he said Keta is ready to become a sports and tourism destination, especially with beach soccer. He expressed frustration that plans for a Keta Sports Complex have stalled for nearly five years despite 10 acres of land already set aside behind the Keta Nursing and Midwifery Training College.
Community leaders believe a multi-purpose complex on that site could attract national tournaments, clubs, and even national teams for camping.
Keta’s reputation in sports continues to grow. The area is known for producing a large number of players for Ghana’s Black Sharks beach soccer team and for contributing talents to Division One, Division Two and the Ghana Premier League. The municipality has also hosted national beach soccer events.
“Build this complex and you will not just be giving our children a field. You will be giving them a future to chase, a dream to train for, and a livelihood to earn,” Togbi Agbesi Awusu II urged.
The new Astro Turf Park at Anloga was named after the Awoamefia of Anlo, Togbi Sri III, in recognition of his role in bringing the project to life.
