Gunu Joins Mepe Chiefs to Mark 70 Years of Afenorto Festival

 

KETU NORTH, Aug. 9, 24HourNews – Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, was at Mepe in the North Tongu District over the weekend to take part in the 70th celebration of the Afenorto Festival.

Hon. Gunu was the Special Guest of Honour at the colourful Grand Durbar that gathered chiefs, residents, government appointees and other guests to honour the history and traditions of the Mepe Traditional Area.

Dignitaries present included North Tongu MP and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, North Tongu DCE Hon. Victoria Amefadzie Yawa Doe, and other traditional and political leaders.

Addressing the durbar, Hon. Gunu said festivals like Afenorto play a vital role in keeping culture alive and in teaching young people about their roots, values and identity.

He used the platform to highlight key government interventions in North Tongu and to outline fresh plans to drive development in the district.

Central to his message was the Volta Economic Corridor initiative. The Minister explained that the project is designed to tap into the economic opportunities of the Volta Lake through agriculture, trade, tourism and improved water transport.

He called on the chiefs and people of Mepe to stay united and to back government programmes aimed at improving livelihoods in the area.

Hon. Gunu expressed optimism that the 70th anniversary celebration would deepen unity, preserve the heritage of Mepe, and rekindle the drive for progress across North Tongu and the entire Volta Region.
