The Deputy Chief Executive Officer in charge of Operations at the National Health Insurance Authority, NHIA, Dr. Senanu Kwesi Dzokoto, says Ghana must prioritize preventive health to reduce the burden on the health insurance scheme and public hospitals.
Speaking during a clean-up exercise at Zotoglo in Dzelukope on Saturday, Dr. Dzokoto donated GH¢10,000 to support sanitation activities in the community.
He said the NHIA cannot only focus on treating sickness, but must also support efforts that keep people healthy.
“NHIA pays for people when they are sick, but we must also invest in keeping them healthy,” Dr. Dzokoto stated.
Clean environments reduce malaria, cholera, and skin diseases. If we spend a little on sanitation today, we save millions in hospital bills tomorrow.”
He explained that diseases linked to poor sanitation account for a significant portion of NHIS claims each year. By supporting monthly clean-ups and proper waste disposal, communities can cut down on preventable illnesses.
Dr. Dzokoto called on other communities in Keta, Anloga and across the country to adopt regular sanitation as a health investment.
