Accra, Oct. 7, 24HourNews – Minister for Local Government Chieftancy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Mahama Ayariga has revealed a new initiative aimed at deepening cooperation between the banking sector and society through street renaming and adoption.
Speaking at a meeting with Heads of Banks today, Mr Ayariga said he shared a vision he holds dear in the spirit of national interest.
He noted that he spoke not only as a minister but also as a fellow citizen who believes deeply in the power of cooperation.
According to him, he envisions a society where streets are more than just roads but symbols of the bond between the people and the institutions that serve them.
He said he therefore proposed that certain streets be renamed in a way that reflects this spirit of cooperation, with names that will remind citizens daily that banks and society must work together.
But Mr Ayariga stressed that renaming alone is not enough. He said he asked the bank heads to join him in maintaining and beautifying these streets, noting that banks have the resources, the reach and the responsibility to help keep public spaces clean, green and welcoming.
“When a bank adopts a street, it is not merely cleaning a road; it is investing in the dignity of our people and the pride of our communities,” he stated.

He assured the bank heads that he does not see the initiative as a burden placed upon them but as a partnership, adding that his ministry will work side by side with them to create a fair, transparent and sustainable framework.
“I want us to build a truly cooperative society where every institution and every citizen plays a part,” he added.
