Accra, Oct. 1 – Former Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has spoken for the first time since his removal from office by President John Dramani Mahama.
In a brief reaction, Mr. Ampofo Ankrah said he has taken the decision in good faith but admitted he is disappointed by the turn of events.
“I am calm but disappointed about the situation,” he told close associates shortly after news of his dismissal broke.
His removal, announced on Wednesday, brings to an end his leadership of the Authority responsible for managing Ghana’s sporting infrastructure.
The dismissal comes barely three weeks after President Mahama dissolved the NSA governing board on September 2, following public outcry over the deteriorating condition and poor management of major stadia across the country.
Although Mr. Ampofo Ankrah was retained to oversee day-to-day operations after the board was dissolved, pressure mounted on his administration in recent days.
He came under intense scrutiny following allegations of a visa facilitation arrangement linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the Minority in Parliament alleging that over US$600,000 had been collected from individuals seeking travel and visa support for the tournament.
The Minority had subsequently called for his immediate dismissal or suspension to allow for investigations.
It is unclear yet who will succeed Mr. Ampofo Ankrah, but sources at the Presidency say a new appointment will be announced in the coming days as government moves to reform the Authority and restore confidence in the management of national sporting facilities.
