Flood Alert: River Dayi Overflows Banks After Heavy Overnight Rains; Farmers, Residents Urged To Stay Away

Hohoe, Sept. 28, 24HourNews – Panic has gripped several communities along the River Dayi in the Volta Region after the river overflowed its banks following heavy overnight rains.

A video and reports from the area this morning show the river in a scary state, full beyond its capacity with floodwaters gushing into adjoining farmlands and nearby homes. The current of the river is described as very strong, fast and extremely dangerous.

The overflow has left many farms along the river submerged, with crops at risk of being washed away. Some homes close to the river have also been affected by the floodwaters.

Following the development, a flood alert has been issued to all farmers and community members who live and depend on the river for their daily activities.

Residents are being cautioned to suspend all activities along the river with immediate effect. This includes farming, fishing, sand winning, bathing and any attempt to cross the river to the other side.

“We are warning everybody to be extra careful. For now, please stay away from the river. No farming, no fishing, no crossing. The water is very dangerous and we do not want to record any casualty,” a community elder warned.

The alert is particularly directed at residents in Dzolu, New Ayoma, Likpe Kukurantumi, Likpe Abrani, Baika, Lolobi, Hohoe and all other communities living along the River Dayi.

Authorities are concerned about the safety of children and have urged parents to keep them away from the river banks and to monitor their movements closely during this rainy period.

Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas have also been advised to move to higher ground as a precautionary measure and to report any emergency situation to NADMO and their assembly members.

Meanwhile, officials say they are monitoring the water level and will provide updates as the situation develops.
