Agbozume, Sept. 27, 24HourNews – The Some Traditional Area has marked the 2026 edition of Sometutu Za with a renewed call for unity, peace and collective development.
The grand durbar at Agbozume brought together chiefs, queen mothers, citizens home and abroad, and friends of Some to reflect on the history and cultural identity of the people.
Delivering the welcome address on behalf of the Planning Committee, its Chairman, Torgbui Geli III, traced the origins of the Some people through oral history.
He recounted their migration through Ketu, Notsie, Tsevie, Ayigida and Keta before settling in their present location. According to the account, conflict broke out in 1792 between their forebears, then known as Ketawo, and the Danes who were supported by Anlo forces. The forebears resisted and defeated the Anlo forces at Dohome.
The address further stated that the people later settled at Glidzeanu before moving to Yegbefume, an area rich in sun palms locally called sove. The settlement became known as Some and its people Someawo. Torgbiga Adamah was identified as the founder of Some, with Agbozume becoming the spiritual and administrative capital.
Torgbui Geli III noted that Sometutu Za was instituted in 1976 by the late Makorsor, Torgbiga Hor II, and was revived in 2023 under the current Makorsor, Torgbiga Adamah III, after several years without celebration.
He explained that the festival commemorates the founding of Some, promotes cultural identity and unity, and provides a platform for tourism, sports, entertainment and development initiatives.
This year’s celebration featured traditional rites, interfaith prayers in churches and mosques, cultural performances, sporting activities, music, arts and crafts exhibitions and other community programmes.
The Planning Committee commended chiefs, queen mothers, elders, youth groups, volunteers and security agencies for their contributions to the successful organization of the festival and thanked citizens at home and abroad for their financial, material and moral support.
The Committee urged citizens to use the occasion to deepen unity, foster partnerships and contribute to the long-term development of the Some Traditional Area, calling on all to celebrate peacefully and with respect for tradition.
