Can The Patient Feel The Difference? – GMTF Boss Challenges Health Leaders To Make Policy Real

Accra, Sept. 24, 24HourNews – The Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku, has challenged health leaders to move beyond policy documents and deliver real, measurable improvements in patient care.

She made the call while speaking at a conference of Senior Nursing and Midwifery Managers, where she urged leaders in the sector to ensure that strategies translate into better experiences for patients.

“The patient does not experience our policy documents. The patient experiences the system,” she stated.

According to her, patients judge the health system not by what is written in strategic plans but by how they are received, treated and cared for at the point of service.

She therefore urged nursing and midwifery leaders to lead with competence, compassion, mentorship and courage, and to reject the normalisation of poor service delivery.

She warned that poor communication, delays and broken equipment must never be allowed to become normal within Ghana’s health facilities.

Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku also called for stronger nursing and midwifery representation in health policy design, stressing that the voices of frontline professionals must be at the decision-making table.

She noted that policies crafted without frontline experience often fail to address the practical realities of patient care.

“Small leadership decisions, repeated consistently, become institutional culture and institutional culture eventually becomes the health system,” she added.

She concluded with a clear challenge to health managers to make their leadership count where it matters most.

Her challenge: Make strategy personal. Make leadership human. Make professionalism visible. And make sure the patient feels the difference.
