Ho, Sept. 22, 24HourNews – Kpando Senior High School has emerged as the overall best performing public Senior High School in the Volta Region in the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), recording an impressive 75% pass rate in the four core subjects.
According to a comprehensive analysis released by the Volta Regional Education Directorate of the Ghana Education Service, Kpando SHS presented 913 candidates, out of which 683 obtained grades A1 to C6 in English Language, Core Mathematics, Integrated Science and Social Studies.
The report was presented during a Capacity Building Workshop for School Leadership and Heads of SHS/SHTS aimed at promoting data-driven decision making to improve academic performance.
Placing second is the renowned Bishop Herman College, which presented 1,042 candidates with 457 qualifying, representing 44%. Anlo Awomefia SHS followed in third position with 39%, after 135 out of its 343 candidates qualified.
Mawuli School, one of the region’s most populous schools, came fourth with 38%, recording 624 qualified out of 1,625 candidates presented, while Anfoega SHS placed fifth with 35% (172 out of 494 candidates).
Other top performing schools in the above 20% bracket include Volo Community SHS with 32%, Sonrise Christian High School, Keta Business College, Sogakope SHS, Keta SHS, St. Paul’s SHS and Akatsi SHTS.
In total, 26,544 candidates from 68 public SHSs across the region sat for the examination, with 4,067 candidates, representing 15.32%, obtaining passes in all four core subjects required for tertiary progression.
A gender analysis shows that males performed marginally better than females. Out of 12,145 males, 1,964 qualified (16.17%), while out of 14,399 females, 2,103 qualified (14.61%).
On subject performance, English Language was the best performed subject with 60.50% pass rate, followed by Social Studies with 38.23%, Integrated Science with 35.93% and Core Mathematics with 24.99%.
The Regional Education Directorate noted that while the performance of top schools is commendable, the overall regional pass rate remains a concern, with 39 schools falling below 5% pass rate.
The Directorate said the analysis is to help assess students’ readiness for progression to tertiary education and to guide school heads to adopt targeted interventions to improve learning outcomes in subsequent WASSCE.
