Accra, Sept. 18, 24HourNews – The National Identification Authority (NIA) has marked Identity Day 2026 as part of its 20th Anniversary celebrations, highlighting the importance of legal identity in promoting inclusion and ensuring that every Ghanaian is recognised.
The celebration, held under the theme “Celebrating Identity, Advancing Inclusion,” underscored the critical role of the Ghana Card in national development and access to essential services.
As part of activities leading up to September 16, the Authority engaged churches and mosques across the country in a nationwide identity sensitisation campaign to educate citizens on the importance of legal identity. The NIA also organised a Corporate Lifestyle Coaching Session for staff to enhance professionalism and staff wellbeing.
On Identity Day, the Authority took its message to the public through an ID Day Float on the streets, aimed at raising awareness on the need for every eligible citizen to register and obtain a Ghana Card.
This was followed by a Special Mass Registration Exercise at the University of Ghana, Legon, where students and members of the university community were given the opportunity to register for the Ghana Card. The exercise reinforced the NIA’s commitment to expanding access to legal identity and bringing its services closer to the people.
The anniversary celebrations are set to continue with an Inter-Agency Games scheduled for Saturday, September 19, 2026, at the Legon Training Pitch. The games will bring together institutions for sports, teamwork and collaboration.
Reflecting on 20 years of service, the NIA said it remains committed to its mandate of providing a credible national identification system for Ghana, celebrating its progress while looking ahead to a future where no one is left behind.
