“You Will Be In Opposition In 2028” – Afenyo-Markin Tells Majority After Mid-Year Budget Review

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has predicted that the governing National Democratic Congress will lose power in the 2028 general elections, following the presentation of the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review.

Reacting moments after Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson delivered the review in Parliament, the Effutu MP said the government’s economic record would return it to opposition.

“2028 you will be in opposition,” Afenyo-Markin declared on the floor, drawing loud cheers from the Minority side and murmurs from the Majority.

The Minority Leader criticized portions of the Mid-Year Review, arguing that key economic indicators and the cost of living remain challenging for ordinary Ghanaians. He accused the government of failing to deliver on its promises despite revenue measures introduced in the main 2026 Budget.

Dr. Forson’s presentation highlighted revised GDP growth projections, inflation trends, debt servicing, and new interventions in education, health, and roads. He told the House that government was “staying the course” on fiscal consolidation while protecting social spending.

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga dismissed the Minority Leader’s claims, insisting the NDC government had stabilized the economy and was on track to meet its medium-term targets. “Ghanaians will renew our mandate in 2028 based on performance, not noise,” he said.

The exchanges set the tone for what is expected to be a heated debate on the Mid-Year Review in the coming days.

First Deputy Speaker Bernard Ahiafor called for decorum and urged both sides to focus on the substance of the policy document.

Parliament is scheduled to begin debate on the Mid-Year Budget Review tomorrow.
