Keta MCE: Flood Gates closed After Water Level Reports, Management Committee Needed

The Municipal Chief Executive for Keta, Mr. Wisdom Seadey, has confirmed that the Keta flood gates were closed yesterday following reports from communities on rising water levels.

Speaking on the decision, Mr. Seadey said the gates were shut after the Assembly received feedback from local residents monitoring the lagoon and sea conditions.

“The gates were closed after we received reports from the communities on the level of the water. We are now left with the closure of the sand bar,” the MCE explained.

He disclosed that maintenance works had recently been carried out on the flood gates to ensure they function properly during the rainy season.

As part of efforts to improve local response, Mr. Seadey added that seven men from the communities have received training on the opening and closing of the gates.

“Seven men from the local level have received training for the opening and closing of the gates. This will help us respond quickly when water levels change,” he said.

The MCE however stressed the need for a formal structure to oversee the facility.

“We need a Management Committee to manage the control of the gate. This will ensure accountability, proper scheduling, and coordination with NADMO and other agencies,” Mr. Seadey stated.

The Keta Lagoon flood control gates are critical in managing excess water from the lagoon into the sea, especially during heavy rains and tidal surges. Flooding remains a major concern for communities including Kedzikope, Havedzi, and Anlo Afiadenyigba.

Residents have in recent weeks appealed for proactive management of the gates to prevent a repeat of last year’s devastating floods that displaced hundreds.

The Assembly says it is working with the Volta River Authority and NADMO to establish the proposed Management Committee soon.
