GIS Arrests 1,055 in Anti-Trafficking Operation Targeting Street Begging Networks

Accra – Aug. 31 – 24HourNews – The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has arrested 1,055 people in an intelligence-led anti-trafficking operation targeting organized street begging networks in parts of the Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions.

The operation, conducted on Saturday, August 29, led to the rescue of 662 children, along with 248 women and 145 men, believed to be mainly West African nationals.

According to the GIS, several Ghanaians suspected of acting as local agents for exploitative begging networks were also apprehended during the exercise.

The Service disclosed that a Nigerian woman who was among those arrested went into labour during the operation and later delivered a baby girl at a medical facility.
