Sekondi Central Prison Launches Skills Training For Inmates To Aid Reintegration.

Accra – Aug. 26 – 24HourNews – The Sekondi Central Prison has launched a new vocational training programme aimed at equipping inmates with employable skills to facilitate their smooth reintegration into society after serving their sentences.

The programme is being implemented by the Education Unit of the prison in partnership with the Complementary Education Unit of the Ghana Education Service (GES).

As part of the initial phase, 12 inmates have begun practical training in dressmaking, kaftan sewing and stitching at the prison’s tailoring workshop. The training will prepare them for the National Certificate I examination.

The Head of Education at the facility, DSP Michael Assabil, said the initiative is in line with the Ghana Prisons Service’s core mandate of reformation, rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates.

He disclosed that plans are underway to establish additional vocational centres within the prison to provide training in other trades such as plumbing and masonry, to broaden the skill options available to inmates.

According to him, the vocational training will not only provide inmates with recognised qualifications but also enhance their chances of securing employment or setting up their own businesses upon release, thereby reducing re-offending.

He called on stakeholders and benevolent organisations to support the expansion of the programme to benefit more inmates.
