Ketu South, Oct.4 – Businessman and traditional leader Akonta Felix Akakpo-Torgbui Tenuvi II has announced a major sports development initiative aimed at transforming grassroots sports at the basic education level in the Ketu South Municipality.
Under the initiative, the philanthropist will this October 2026 donate 300 sets of jerseys and 300 footballs to 100 basic schools across the municipality.
In a statement to announce the intervention, Akonta Felix Akakpo said the move represents another giant leap toward getting the fundamentals right through strategic investment aimed at unearthing hidden talents and easing the logistical burden on schools.
“Grassroots sports development at the basic school level remains the essential foundation for discovering raw talent, promoting physical well-being, and instilling lifelong values of discipline, teamwork, and resilience,” he noted.
He explained that while he has in the past invested in handball, basketball, volleyball and athletics at both basic and senior high school levels, football remains the heartbeat of the nation and a significant contributor to national economies across the world.
According to him, this underscores why private partnerships and NGOs’ provision of equipment, sponsorships and structured youth programs are crucial, even as governments and local assemblies prioritize additional funding, improved sports facilities and dedicated administrative structures.
“I have personally witnessed the challenges some schools face in securing befitting jerseys, a situation that leads to the demoralization of young sports boys and girls. Through this initiative, I am bringing that cycle to an immediate end as I continue to work assiduously on infrastructure development for grassroots sports,” he said.
Akonta added that the intervention is particularly timely as Ketu South prepares to host the 56th Inter-District Sports Festival in 2027, noting that the support will greatly aid schools in their preparations to welcome the rest of the districts in the Volta Region.
Under the distribution plan, each of the 100 beneficiary schools will receive 3 sets of jerseys and 3 footballs to support their Boys U-13, Girls U-15 and Boys U-15 teams.
A centralized handing-over ceremony is scheduled for later this month, with sports prefects, school heads and officials from the Municipal Education Directorate in attendance to ensure official distribution to the respective schools.
“I firmly believe that many of our basic community challenges can be resolved through our own collective efforts. I therefore encourage all of us to unite to change the narrative while we await complementary support from government,” he stated.
He also extended New Month greetings to residents and prayed for continued strength and sustenance.
