Accra, Oct. 1 – President John Dramani Mahama has relieved the Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, of his duties with immediate effect.
The decision brings an abrupt end to his tenure at the helm of Ghana’s state sports agency.
His removal comes barely three weeks after President Mahama dissolved the NSA governing board on September 2, following mounting public concerns over the poor management and deteriorating condition of major sporting facilities across the country.
After the dissolution of the board, Mr. Ampofo Ankrah was allowed to continue as Director-General, overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Authority.
However, his administration came under intense public scrutiny in recent days over allegations surrounding a visa facilitation deal linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Minority in Parliament at a press briefing called for his immediate dismissal or suspension, alleging that more than US$600,000 had been collected from members of the public under the guise of assisting them with travel and visa arrangements for the tournament.
According to the Minority, the arrangement lacked transparency and due process, raising questions about accountability at the Authority.
Sources at the Presidency indicate that a new Director-General will be announced in the coming days to steer the affairs of the Authority and to oversee reforms at the country’s sporting facilities.
