Akatsi, Sept. 24, 24HourNews – The Akatsi South Municipal Assembly on Wednesday organised a road safety sensitisation programme for commercial drivers and motor riders in the municipality as part of measures to curb the rising cases of road accidents.
The programme, held at the Assembly Hall, brought together members of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Progressive Transport Owners Association (PROTOA), Motor Riders Association and other transport unions operating within the Akatsi South Municipality.
The sensitisation exercise was aimed at promoting responsible road use, improving driver discipline and ensuring strict adherence to road traffic regulations.
Resource persons from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service took participants through key topics including over-speeding, wrongful overtaking, drunk-driving, use of crash helmets, regular maintenance of vehicles and the need to respect road signs and traffic signals.
The facilitators cautioned riders and drivers against reckless behaviours that endanger lives and urged them to make safety their topmost priority at all times.
Speaking at the programme, officials of the Assembly noted that road safety remains a shared responsibility and called on all road users, including pedestrians, to play their part in reducing accidents.
They assured that the Assembly will sustain its collaboration with transport operators, security agencies and other stakeholders to intensify public education and enforce road safety regulations in the municipality.
Some participants who spoke to 24HourNews commended the Assembly for the initiative and appealed for regular sensitisation programmes to help protect lives and property.
The Assembly reiterated its commitment to building a safe and disciplined road environment, stressing that “Together We Build” a safer Akatsi South.
