Dzodze, Sept. 24, 24HourNews – Tragedy struck at the ongoing Big Push road construction site around the Penyi-Dzodze stretch in the Ketu North Municipality on Wednesday morning, when a grader allegedly ran over a female casual worker, killing her instantly.
The deceased has been identified as Mariama Gbemu, a young mother of two who was engaged as a labourer on the project.
According to information gathered, Mariama Gbemu, like other casual workers, reported early in the morning to sign her attendance. She had not yet started her normal duties at the time the incident occurred.
Her job was to pick out unwanted materials from crushed stones and gravel being used for the road construction.
In the course of work, the grader, a heavy-duty machine used for levelling, reportedly ran over her and two other workers. Mariama died instantly at the scene.
The two other workers, a man and a woman, sustained injuries and were rushed to St. Anthony Hospital at Dzodze for treatment. The male victim has since been treated and discharged, while the female victim is still on admission receiving treatment.
The incident has thrown the entire construction site and the Dzodze community into a state of shock and mourning.
Colleagues described Mariama as a hardworking young woman who was determined to earn a decent living to provide for herself and her two children.
She was said to be a dedicated worker who never missed work and was focused on fending for her family without depending on anyone.
Family sources say Mariama left home early Wednesday morning with hopes and plans, only for the family to receive the heartbreaking news of her untimely death a few hours later.
She is survived by two children who are now left without their mother.
Meanwhile, residents and fellow workers have called for a thorough investigation into the incident and for stricter safety measures at the construction site to prevent such tragedies in the future.
The body of the deceased has been deposited at the morgue while police have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
