ECOWAS Launches Strategic Publications to Promote Evidence-Based Peace Support Operations in West Africa.

Abuja – Aug. 29 – 24HourNews – The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has launched a series of strategic publications aimed at promoting evidence-based peace support operations and strengthening regional security responses in West Africa.

The publications, unveiled in Abuja, Nigeria on August 27, 2026, highlight three decades of regional peace interventions, mediation efforts and peacebuilding initiatives. According to ECOWAS, the initiative seeks to preserve institutional memory, leverage operational lessons learned and provide strategic insights for more effective responses to contemporary and emerging security challenges.

The launch brought together policymakers, defence and security officials, diplomats, academics and development partners. Among those present were Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa; ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, H.E. Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah; Commissioner for Internal Services, Dr. Wakibi Bappah; Chairman of the Committee of Permanent Representatives of ECOWAS, H.E. Ambassador Nicolas Auguste Nyouky; and members of the Committee of Permanent Representatives from Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, The Gambia, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Togo.

Others included former ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, H.E. Salamatu Suleiman; founder of the Amandla Institute for Policy and Leadership Advancement, H.E. Dr. Kayode Fayemi; and Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Professor Eghosa Osaghae.

Representatives from the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), the West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI), the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), former senior officials of the ECOWAS Commission, academic institutions and other strategic partners also participated in discussions on regional knowledge preservation and institutional learning.

On the occasion, ECOWAS honoured former ECOMOG Commanders and their deputies, as well as journalists who covered civil conflicts on the frontlines across the region, for their sacrifices and contributions to peace and stability in West Africa.
