Kua – Aug. 28 – 24HourNews – Kua Community in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region is urgently appealing for assistance as River Angor, once a vital source of water, fishing, and transportation, is now heavily choked by aquatic weeds.
The river, which has served the community for generations, is currently covered by dense vegetation, making it increasingly difficult for residents to use the waterway.
According to community members, canoes can no longer move freely through several parts of the river, fishing activities have been severely disrupted, and women who depend on the river for their daily activities are also struggling to access it.
The scale of the infestation has become a major concern. With aquatic weeds covering almost the entire river, community members say manual clearing efforts are no longer sufficient to address the situation.
The deteriorating condition of River Angor is not only affecting fishing and transportation but is also threatening the livelihoods of residents who depend on the river for their daily needs.
Community elders are therefore making an urgent appeal to the Volta River Authority (VRA), Water Resources Commission, NGOs, philanthropists, corporate organisations, government agencies and other stakeholders to come to their aid.
They are calling for the deployment of the necessary equipment and expertise to clear the aquatic weeds and restore the river to a condition where residents can once again fish, travel and access the water safely.
“River Angor is more than just a waterway, it is part of the livelihood and heritage of the people of Kua. The community is appealing for urgent intervention before the situation worsens. Kua needs help. River Angor needs help. Let us come together to restore the river and bring life back to the community,” the report by the Assemblyman of Kua Community, Hon. Isaac Kuwornu, stated.
