Traffic Diversion On Kaneshie-Mallam Highway From September 7 As GARID Begins Major Drain Construction

 

Accra – Aug. 26 – 24HourNews – Motorists using the Kaneshie-Mallam Highway will experience traffic diversions from September 7, 2026, as government begins construction of major stormwater drains to address perennial flooding in Accra.

The Project Coordinator of the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project, Dr. Kwadwo Ohene Sarfo, announced a two-phase Traffic Management Plan to facilitate the works.

He said the first phase will commence on September 7, 2026, with the closure of the westbound carriageway of the Dr. Busia Highway at Pamprom Junction. The diversion is expected to last until the end of November 2026, with designated alternative routes for motorists heading towards First Light Junction and beyond.

The overall drainage project is scheduled to run from September 2026 to October 2027.

According to Dr. Sarfo, the project will involve the construction of a double-cell underground rectangular stormwater drain measuring about 10 metres wide and 1.95 kilometres long, to replace the existing pipe drains.

He explained that the intervention forms part of government’s broader GARID flood prevention and mitigation programme aimed at improving Accra’s drainage infrastructure and reducing flood risks.

Motorists and commuters have been advised to cooperate with traffic management personnel and follow directional signs during the construction period.
