Ketu North – Aug. 26 – 24HourNews – The Municipal Chief Executive for Ketu North, Hon. Martin Amenaki, has pledged the Assembly’s full support for the Sena Institute of Technology (SIT) as it transitions into a fully-fledged university.
This came to light when the MCE received a delegation from the Institute led by its President and Founder, Dr. Andrew Agbleke, at his office.
According to Dr. Agbleke, the Institute, which has operated in Penyi for over 15 years, has received accreditation from the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) to become a university.
He said SIT was established to build a research centre for biotechnology and product development, and has over the past decade trained more than 170 people.
Dr. Agbleke added that the Institute runs international exchange programmes that bring students and researchers from Harvard University, University of Connecticut, Nigeria, The Gambia and Lesotho to Ghana.
He noted that in terms of product development, SIT has developed diagnostics for malaria, cholera, typhoid, avian flu and swine flu, sequenced about 200 samples from the Atlantic Ocean from Aflao to Axim, and is engaged in drug discovery research using local plants.
Dr. Mamello Mohale, a biochemist from Lesotho and a member of the delegation as founding faculty, said she is in Ghana to help scale the Institute into a university focused on product development, innovation, conservation and biodiversity, as well as fibroids research.
Hon. Amenaki commended the Institute for its remarkable contribution to research and innovation in the Municipality and assured the delegation of the Assembly’s support to ensure the successful conversion of the Institute into a university.
He said the Assembly remains committed to supporting institutions that drive education, research and development in Ketu North.
