ECOWAS Commission President Holds High-Level Talks With UN Independent Expert On UNOWAS Mandate Review.

 

Ethiopia- Aug. 26 – 24HourNews -The President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, has held high-level consultations with H.E. Sahle-Work Zewde, former President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and Independent Expert appointed by the United Nations Secretary-General to lead the strategic review of the mandate and activities of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS).

The meeting provided a platform for in-depth exchanges on the evolving political, peace and security landscape in West Africa and the Sahel, the effectiveness of existing regional and international response mechanisms, and the future role of UNOWAS in advancing preventive diplomacy, conflict prevention, regional dialogue and multilateral cooperation.

The discussions also offered ECOWAS an opportunity to highlight its perspectives on regional integration, governance, institutional coordination and the need to maintain a resilient and coherent regional architecture capable of addressing emerging challenges and opportunities.

In attendance were Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security; H.E. Ambassador Kinza Jawara-Njai, Permanent Observer of ECOWAS to the United Nations; and Mr. Abdou Kolley, Chief of Staff to the President of the ECOWAS Commission.

The engagement allowed ECOWAS to present its strategic assessment of regional peace and security dynamics, ongoing efforts to promote dialogue, trust-building and regional cohesion, as well as its vision for a strengthened partnership between ECOWAS and the United Nations.

Both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to promoting peace, stability, democratic governance and sustainable development in West Africa and the Sahel.
