“Teach Our Tongues First” – Nufialaga Norvibey Urges Gov’t To Drop Chinese, Save Indigenous Languages

A cultural advocate has fired a warning to the government: fix Ghanaian languages before importing new ones.

Speaking at the Ewe Za Development Forum, Nufialaga Mawufemor Korbla Norvibey challenged the Minister of Education’s plan to introduce Chinese language studies, calling it misplaced at a time when many Ghanaian students cannot competently speak, read or write their mother tongues.

“Our children are losing Ewe, losing Ga, losing Dagbani. And we want to add Chinese? That is putting the cart before the horse,” Mr. Norvibey said.

He argued that language is not just for communication, but the backbone of identity, values, and heritage. According to him, the decline in indigenous language proficiency is already eroding culture among the youth.

Mr. Norvibey is pushing for the government to redirect resources into training more Ghanaian language teachers, developing teaching materials, and making indigenous languages compulsory and examinable at all levels.

“We must invest in what makes us Ghanaian. If we lose our languages, we lose ourselves,” he added.

The Ewe Za Development Forum brought together chiefs, educators and cultural leaders to strategize on how to protect Ewe customs, language and traditions for the next generation.
