“Our Culture Is Not A Costume” – Journalist Abdul-Iddrisu Faisel Urges Volta To Guard Heritage

Renowned journalist Abdul-Iddrisu Faisel has issued a passionate call for the preservation of the Volta Region’s authentic cultural heritage, warning that imitation and commercialization of indigenous traditions risk eroding the identity of future generations.

Speaking at the Eweza Development Forum held at Cisneros Hotel, Sogakope, Mr. Iddrisu urged cultural custodians and residents to protect the originality of their customs, language, festivals, music, dance, traditional attire, and values.

“Our culture is not a costume to be altered for trends or entertainment. It is our identity, our history, and our inheritance,” he stressed, calling on communities to reject fake or diluted representations of their heritage.

According to him, safeguarding authentic cultural practices is not only vital to preserving the identity of the Ewe people and other ethnic groups in the region, but also key to unlocking the Volta Region’s tourism and economic potential.

Mr. Iddrisu appealed to traditional authorities, the youth, policymakers, and cultural institutions to work together to document, promote, and pass on genuine cultural values to future generations.

The Eweza Development Forum brought together cultural advocates, development experts, media practitioners, and community leaders to discuss the role of culture in advancing sustainable development across the Volta Region.

Participants agreed that culture must be positioned as both a foundation for identity and a driver of development in the region.
