South Tongu Receives 20 Tents From Red Cross To Support June 29 Flood Victims

Relief efforts for victims of the June 29 floods in the South Tongu District have received a boost following the donation of 20 emergency shelter kits by the Ghana Red Cross Society, in partnership with the Swiss Red Cross.

The intervention follows joint appeals by the District Chief Executive, Hon. Victoria Dzeklo, and the Member of Parliament for South Tongu, Hon. Maxwell Kwame Lukutor, after the floods left several homes collapsed and families displaced.

The DCE, together with officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation and heads of departments at the Assembly, supervised the distribution of the shelter materials to the worst-hit electoral areas.

Breakdown of Distribution:
– Adutor Electoral Area: 10 tents
– Gonu-Agbokofe Electoral Area: 2 tents
– Dzebetato Electoral Area: 2 tents

Each shelter kit, when fully set up, can accommodate up to six people and is designed to withstand environmental conditions for at least six months with proper maintenance. The temporary shelters are expected to provide immediate relief and dignity to residents who lost their homes.

Hon. Victoria Dzeklo expressed profound appreciation to the Red Cross Society for the prompt intervention. She however noted that more support is needed as the Assembly rolls out comprehensive recovery plans.

“We are deeply grateful to the Red Cross Society for this timely intervention. However, like Oliver Twist, we respectfully ask for more as we work tirelessly to fully restore affected communities,” the DCE stated.

The June 29 floods destroyed homes and farmlands in parts of South Tongu, forcing dozens of residents to seek shelter with relatives and in makeshift structures.

NADMO officials say assessments are ongoing to determine additional needs, including food, water, and building materials, as the district moves from emergency relief to recovery.
