Afoko Cautious On Wontumi Conviction, Says He Must Consult NPP Legal Team First

Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Mr. Paul Afoko, has given a measured reaction to the conviction of Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Speaking on the matter, Mr. Afoko said his sympathies were with Mr. Boasiako, but he would need more information before describing him as a political prisoner.

“My heart went out to him, but I would need to be enlightened before calling him a political prisoner,” he stated.

He explained that he would first seek advice from the party’s legal team before taking a definitive position on the conviction and its implications.

“I sympathize with him on a personal level. However, on the legal and political dimensions, I need proper briefing from our lawyers. I cannot rush to label this as political persecution without the facts,” Mr. Afoko added.

Chairman Wontumi was convicted earlier this week. Details of the charges and sentencing have sparked debate within political circles, with some party supporters describing the process as politically motivated.

Mr. Afoko’s comments mark one of the first high-profile reactions from senior figures in the NPP since the court ruling. His call for legal consultation signals a cautious approach as the party assesses its official response.

The NPP is yet to issue a formal statement on the conviction.
