The Deputy Chief Executive Officer in charge of Operations at the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Senanu Kwesi Djokoto, has toured the Keta Municipal Hospital as part of engagements ahead of the facility’s 100-year anniversary celebration.
Dr. Djokoto revealed that management of the hospital paid a courtesy call on him at his office in Accra last month to officially inform him of the centenary celebration. The Chairman of the Anniversary Planning Committee, who doubles as the Dufia of Keta, Togbi James Ocloo V, also urged him to support the hospital during the anniversary.
Speaking during the tour, Dr. Dzokoto recounted his working relationship with the facility during his tenure as Volta Regional Director of Health Services.
“We have worked together. The Maternity and Child Center and the Infectious Disease Center were all built under me when I was Regional Director,” he said.
He further disclosed that discussions are ongoing to position the Keta Municipal Hospital as a major referral center for the southern part of the Volta Region.
“Hohoe has been the regional hospital and also the referral center for the northern part of the Volta Region – Kpando, Afadzato and others. Ho has been for the central part of the region. We are considering Keta for the southern part,” Dr. Djokoto stated.
The announcement has been welcomed by hospital staff and residents, who say an upgrade to referral status will reduce the burden of traveling long distances to Ho and Hohoe for specialist care.
Management of the 100-year-old facility expressed appreciation to Dr. Dzokoto for the visit and his continued support. They also outlined some challenges facing the hospital, including equipment and infrastructure needs, ahead of the anniversary celebration.
The Keta Municipal Hospital serves thousands of residents from Keta, Anloga, Ketu South, and parts of the Tongu districts.
