Residents of Anlo Afiadenyigba and Havedzi can expect relief soon as government prepares to return contractors to site on the long-abandoned road linking the two communities.
The announcement comes after the Ministry of Roads and Highways received over 2.4 billion cedis in new allocations to tackle priority road projects across the country.
For years, the 10.3-kilometre stretch has been in poor condition. The situation worsened recently when a child lost their life on the road, a tragedy that drew renewed calls for urgent action from locals.
Roads Minister, Kwame Agbodza, made the disclosure during a tour of the Volta Region on Sunday, March 16. He said his team had inspected the affected section and agreed on next steps.
“We have been to the location. The engineers and all stakeholders have agreed that we will do a fresh assessment and bring in a contractor to finish the stretch that runs through the lagoon area,” Agbodza stated.
He added that funds released for road works will be properly managed to reduce the challenges commuters and transport operators face.
The project was first awarded in 2013 under the previous NDC government. Work progressed to more than 70 percent completion before it stalled in 2016. The contract was later terminated under the NPP administration and was never re-awarded, leaving residents and drivers to endure years of difficulty.
According to the minister, government is now prioritizing the completion of the road to address concerns raised by the people in the area.
